Just 2"x2"x5" in size, using approx 12G black steel plate, this is filled with silver sand and is useful for tempering small parts. Put on a stand over a propane burner, it is quite quick to get up to temperature and retains heat for quite some time - long enough usually to allow reasonable gradual soak cooling - aided if necessary by covering in some weld cloth. It was used most for finishing off small pieces of silver steel/drill rod, after forming and grinding which could leave excessive hardness and so brittleness. Box was roughly welded together - inside are small tack-welded supports for the simple lid. |
